Ringing Room

5-channel sound, 1-channel video, 2 bell wheels built from oak in 1864, installed inside the wood workshop at the Ruskin School of Art.
Sound is imagined as an inhabitant of space and objects, proposing the mechanistic noises of church-bell restoration as negative traces of absence, where notions of a temporal sublime are pierced in the materiality of tuned metal.
Listening into an empty bell tower, images take surreal turns as sound curls into places we can only imagine; the slivery well of an inverted bell, the spiral interior in the shell of a snail.
